NoBites Personal Insect Repellent Review
While I may occasionally use personal insect repellent in social situations, I gave up using insect repellent while hiking a long time ago in favour of covering up. My reason is that commercially available repellents seem to attract more flies, mosquitoes and other bugs than they repel. I am sure the bugs have become used to the smell but all the same they never seemed effective on tough bush bities. And of course many of those repellents also contain DEET – a chemical we should all be avoiding.
NoBites is a natural, plant-based and sustainably-sourced insect repellent.
The NoBites mission is to develop a safe and effective insect repellent that is kind to people and the environment. This insect repellent was developed by two very smart Aussies who love the outdoors and who wanted others to be able to enjoy them without the annoyance of flies and the risk of mossie bites.
The key ingredient in NoBites is oil of the lemon Eucalyptus (Citriodiol®) that is one of the natural oils extracted from the leaves and twigs of the lemon-scented Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora Hook also called Corymbia). Citriodiol has passed the most rigorous safety and efficacy tests and is backed by the Centre for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.
In addition, the active ingredient PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol to be precise) contains pesticidal properties and is the alternative to toxic mosquito repellents. It is thought that the effectiveness comes from masking the environmental cues that mosquitoes, in particular, use to locate their target. There have been many studies since the 1990s on the effectiveness of PMD as an insect repellent and it is gaining a reputation for being an effective alternative to inorganic pesticides.
And if you need further convincing, NoBites provides protection from midges, mosquitoes, sandflies, blackflies and even ticks!
NoBites is Australian owned and manufactured, safe for kids and safe for use during pregnancy. It comes in a handy 100ml pump pack. At $23.95 it is more expensive than DEET based insect repellents but it is also safer for you and sustainably sourced.
We have tested NoBites and it repels the fiercest and most persistent bugs! We have even shared NoBites with our family for use on small children and sensitive skin. NoBites will definitely be something we continue to use.
We Like
- DEET free so its safe for you
- Cruelty free (specifically Cruelty Vegan Free) so no animals were harmed in the making
- Plant based using the lemon-scented Eucalyptus so its natural
- Sustainably sourced which minimises the environmental impact
- Provides 6 hours of protection
- It works!
We Don't Like
- I love the natural scent of the lemon Eucalyptus but find it very overpowering for my sensitive sense of smell – if this is you, then just use it sparingly. The scent doesn’t impact Tim at all!
Best Uses
- Anytime you are outdoors and there are bugs around
